The paper explains the main components of an Automatic Passenger Counter and compares infrared beams, time-of-flight and LiDAR, stereo-vision and 3D cameras, weight sensors, and device-based detection.

It also describes how counting accuracy is measured, how automatic counts can be benchmarked against manual observations, and how APC devices are installed and integrated into public transport vehicles.
